Some covers for The Week

You'd think it's "running for president" season!

I call this one "Mudslide". Pretty clever huh? Mud and a slide in the back ground. I just ooze jean-yus!
I cropped this one, but my favorite part was just doing some silly feet in the for ground. Type was put over it, but I know it was there! HA!
This wasn't my idea at all. More subdued than I tend to be. The Week said if aliens land on the White House lawn, I get the cover for sure that week. So I'll do a mellow cover or two while waiting for the big pay-off! I hope aliens have a sense of humor.

Paper. mate?

I'm still experimenting with lighting when shooting my art with the digital camera. I used floods this time. I thought they were tungsten light, but I realized after a few test shots I was using lights made to be used with photo umbrellas. I loved how bright the 300 watt bulbs were but the shadows didn't have much detail or color. The reds don't glow in the photo like they do "in person". I think I need to experiment with some other settings for these lights or pick up some umbrellas for them.

I picked up a cover to do for the Village Voice yesterday. It's a lot of work. I know I only got it because most of the other guys the Voice has been using wouldn't do 6 faces for what their budget is. I'm going to use is as sort of a statement to say "I exist dammit!" to the other magazines in the New York City area. Last time I did a Voice cover I got a number of calls from various magazines to see my portfolio. Unfortunately I did the image they asked for, but it looked nothing like the stuff I had in my book. The New Yorker people looked so disappointed when I showed them a bunch of caricatures after they saw a much less exaggerated face on the Voice cover. Of course not as dejected as I felt leaving their offices with no work!

Things are moving.

A few of the latest spots and what not. In order: The Week, Westword, Bank Technologies News (last 2). Got a mailing out over a week ago of the 1st Bob Dylan card. Met some art directors at the Society of Illustrators by chance while lunching with my buddy Steve Ellis. I of course stuffed them with my latest cards. My other friend, Ray Lago, wrote a really nice (short) e mail to an art director at Topps who contacted me immediately. Ray was already doing some work for him and was nice enough to give me an introduction. I can't show what I've done for the project yet. Another project I've done that I can't show yet are some sketches for the next Ozze Fest poster.

My website is updated finally!
Thanks to David, Dae and Lux for patience and help!

The Week again...

Last night's work. I'll be posting some pictures from the New York Comic Con next. That is the reason I had to cram this week. I didn't get around to doing the sketches I was supposed to do. I had one illo due on Monday, 3 on Tues. and the cover for The Week on Wed.

The process. Sketch in the office on Monday. I redrew and painted a monochromatic acrylic under painting on the gesso-ed panel. Monday night. Tuesday I took a quick photo at that stage to show Brett, the AD, how the color was going. The consensus was that there needed to be an environment. I blocked one in out of my head. I wanted to be careful to make a decent composition since it wasn't planned from the start. I also didn't have a lot of time to do anything very involved. Simple wood panel, a corner of a desk cheating in. I was just thinking in shapes and then trying to figure out what would fit in them.

I signed the painting hanging on the wall as my own personal amusement. I hope it doesn't get cropped out! I got to bed around 8:30 AM-ish on Wed.. I ended up liking it.
